JAMES M. HARTWELL OBIUTARY

James Munroe Hartwell, age 86, of South Hampton, New Hampshire, died Friday morning, March 9, 2012, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth “Betty” P. (Nally) Hartwell, who died September 3, 2004.

Born in Haverhill, September 5, 1925, he was the son of the late Paul H. and Florence M. Hartwell and was a graduate of Merrimac High School, Class of 1943.

After graduating from high school, Mr. Hartwell joined the military, serving with the United States Navy during World War II from October 5, 1943 until his honorable discharge on March 30, 1947.

Having earned his wings during his military service, he became a commercial pilot for American Airlines from 1952 until his retirement in 1985.

He is survived by his eight children, James M. Hartwell, Jr., who was his caretaker for the past five years; Linda Shoukimas and husband Peter; Catherine McFarland and husband John; Carol Robinson and husband Peter all of S. Hampton, NH; Jamie Wallaga and husband Anthony of Kensington, NH; Debra Lariviere and husband Gary of S. Hampton; Sandra Colby and husband William of Goshen, CT. and Jill Dennis and husband Patrick of Seabrook, NH; a sister, Diane N. Kokaris of Seabrook, NH; a brother, Peter Hartwell of North Andover; along with sixteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Constance, Maribelle and June, and a brother, Paul Hartwell.

Visiting hours were held Sunday at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amesbury. Donations in his memory may be made to the Merrimack Valley Hospice House, 360 North Avenue, Haverhill, MA 01830.
